Wednesday, January 20, 2010 7:00p.m. Vlad Girshevich, jazz pianist from Denver
Vlad is one of the most in-demand musicians in the Southwest. Originally from Uzbekistan, he emigrated to the US in 1995, and is now a regular in the jazz scene in Denver. His improvisations range from amazing displays of technical virtuosity to warm introspective moods. He has been compared to Keith Jarrett and Thelonios Monk. Not to be missed!

Crestone is fortunate to have a top-notch vocal coach in Sue Vaughan, formerly of the Metropolitan Opera. Several of her students will present a delightful Valentine's Day concert of love songs from the world of opera and musical comedy. This will be a fund-raiser for the LINK program at the Charter School.

Abe Minzer, of Colorado Springs, will be returning to the Music House to present an all-Chopin recital, including Mazurkas, Scherzos, Etudes, a Polonaise-Fantasy, and an Impromptu. Dr. Minzer is a master of subtleties of touch, rangeing from thunderous to pianissimo.

Sunday, April 11, 2010 2:00p.m. The Playground Ensemble from Denver University
This is their third annual appearance in the Music House. The group is devoted to the performance of works from the 20th and 21st centuries, and to promoting Colorado composers. Included in the program will be four pieces for viola and cello by Sylvia Hazlerig. Come hear a variety of fresh and interesting music!

Sunday, April 25, 2010 2:00p.m. The Fuchs Trio from Denver
Richard Fuchs, violin, James Fittz, cello, and Luanne Fuchs Long, piano, will present a lovely afternoon of works by Beethoven and Brahms. If you love the repertoire of traditional classical chamber music, this is your cup of tea!

Sunday, May 2, 2010 2:00p.m. Cindy Kallet and Grey Larsen, folk duo
Cindy is a superb singer, guitarist, song writer, and multi-instrumentalist. Grey is one of America’s finest players of the Irish flute and tin whistle, as well as an accomplished singer and concertina, fiddle, and harmonium player. Together, they weave songs and tunes of vibrant color and rich texture.

Sunday, May 16, 2010 2:00p.m. Catie Moore, flute, with Sylvia Hazlerig, piano and harpsichord
This is Catie and Sylvia’s second concert in the Music House. Their program will include a Baroque Sonata by Loeillet, a contemporary Sonatina for flute and harpsichord by Hazlerig, and the Fantasia para un Gentilhombre, by Joaquin Rodrigo, originally a guitar concerto, transcribed for flute and piano by James Galway. It is wonderful to hear Catie’s excellent and melodious flute playing.

Thursday, January 8, 2009 7p.m. Dos Americas guitar duo and friends
Dos Americas, consisting of Argentinian guitarist Alejandro Davila and Canon City guitarist Jim Bosse will be returning to the Music House with an unusual multi-media program. They will be joined by Rudy Melena, poet and vocalist, in a set that will include a slide show of photographs by Roger Jensen and Jim Bosse. Then Colorado Springs pianist Abe Minzer will join the guitar duo in a performance of the "Suite Indiana" by Jorge Cardoso.

Saturday, February 7, 2009 5:30p.m. Pre-Valentine Pot Luck supper and Sing-along.
Get in the mood for that special day by singing old love songs from the 1890s through the 1960s.

A piano major at Adams State in Alamosa, Charles will be playing his senior recital, including music by Mozart from the 18th Century, Alkan, from the 19th Century, and Bolcom from the 20th Century. Come hear this brilliant young pianist playing a block-buster program!

This Contemporary Music group made up of faculty and students from the Lamont School of Music put on a delightful show last year; this is their return appearance. Devoted to performing unusual works from the 20th and 21st centuries, they will present pieces by a variety of composers, including Sylvia Hazlerig. Performers are Rebekah Durham, violin, Don Schumacher, viola, Richard vonFoerster, cello, Reggie Berg, piano, and vocalists Megan Buness and Conrad Kehn.

Sunday, April 19, 2009 2 p.m. Abram Minzer and friends from “Classically Alive” of Colorado Springs
Billed as “The Brahms Connection,” this concert will feature music by Johannes Brahms and his contemporaries. Pianist Abe Minzer will be joined by Lee Barnes, clarinet, and Dave Stoller, French horn, in works by Reinecke (a close friend of Brahms) and Jenner (Brahms’ only pupil.) And, as a bonus, Abe and Sylvia Hazlerig will play some 4-hand renditions of Brahms’ Waltzes and the 5th Hungarian Dance

This will be the second appearance in the Music House for the Skellenger brothers. Electric bassist Matt is well-known in Denver for his progressive techniques and unique style that fuses elements of jazz and world music. Andy, who resides in Crestone, is an amazing percussionist, playing cajon, tabla, and udu.

Noah is no stranger to Crestone audiences; he has been delighting music lovers here since he was five years old. Now 22, and a senior celtic harp major at the University of Oregon, Noah will return for his annual concert in the Music House. He just keeps getting better and better!

Rene Knetsch and Lynne Glaeske, violins, Donald Schumacher, viola, and Richard vonFoerster, cello.
This is a special FREE concert, celebrating Sylvia’s 75th birthday. Five years ago, the Confluence quartet honored Sylvia’s 70th by performing a quartet she wrote for them; now she has written another quartet, at their request, for this celebration. Also they will perform music of Bela Bartok, Lou Harrison, and Karl Jenkins.

Sunday, July 12, 2009 2:00p.m. Alpine Overlook Chamber Music Ensemble and students
Flautist Sue Englert, violinist Anne Divine, with harpsichordist and  pianist Sylvia Hazlerig will play music of various Baroque composers, three Siciliennes by Bach, Faure, and Michael McLean, as well as the lively tango, La Cumparsita by Rodriguez, and some ragtime of Scott Joplin.  Sylvia's advanced pupil, Jesse Jones, will perform the Sonata Pathetique, Opus 13, of Beethoven.  Other students participating will be Sarah Goldberg, Jumyung Dorgei, Soleil Medina, Quincy Meisman, Isabella Roberts and Ryan Mathias.

Keyboardist, trumpeter and singer Ed Wheatley will return to the Music House with his entertaining show, featuring familiar songs from many of the old great movies, including As Time Goes By from Casablanca, Moon River from Breakfast at Tiffany's, Til There Was You from The Music Man, When You Wish Upon a Star from Pinocchio, and many more.  Ed's interesting commentary of historical tidbits related to the songs enhances the presentation, and makes for a happy trip down Memory Lane.

Mark Dudrow, from Taos, and Mason Brown, from Boulder, will team up for an eclectic afternoon featuring music spanning three centuries, and from many genres--classical, folk, bluegrass, world music, rock, vaudville, and more. Mason plays everything from finger-style guitar to banjo to viola de gamba. Lots of fun!

Sylvia will play an eclectic program: Schubert and Brahms in the first half, and Scott Joplin after intermission. Joplin didn’t only write Rags—you will hear his lovely Mexican Serenade called “Solace”, and the Finale from his opera, Treemonisha.

These two piano profs from Laredo, Texas will present a delightful evening of solos and duets by Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Grieg, Debussy, Gershwin, and Lerner&Lowe. Music House audiences will recall Fritz's brilliant playing from his previous appearances; this time he is bringing a colleague with him for a double delight.

The Playground is a group dedicated to the performance of music from the late 20th and early 21st centuries, mostly by living composers. This promises to be an exciting afternoon of music you may never have heard before.

This is Jerry's second appearance in the house. Based in Denver, Jerry tours all over the country, and his latest CD, Bring Down the Storm, received a glowing review in the Celtic Connection magazine.

Saturday, May 10, 2008 8 p.m. The Pike Ensemble
Colorado musicians Tom Munch, Rex Rideout, and Don Richmond, playing a whole slew of folk instruments, including guitars, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, pipes, and even a Hardanger fiddle (come and see this amazing instrument!), in a moving historical program tracing the journey of Zebulon Pike in Colorado, through the songs and instrumentals that were popular at that time.

Sunday, May 25, 2008 2 p.m. The Confluence String Quartet
This is the eighth annual appearance of this wonderful classical ensemble from Denver. The musicians are Rene Knetsch and Lynne Glaeske, violins, Don Schumacher, viola, and Richard vonFoerster, cello. This year's program will include works by Beethoven, Puccini, Peter Sculthorpe, and Terry Riley.

Saturday, June 14, 2008 8 p.m. Washer, art rock duo
Sisters Katherine and Elizabeth Michalak make up this Crestone-based art rock band. Their hip, intelligent music combines thoughtful and well-crafted lyrics with the complex guitar work they originally developed as instrumental guitarists. They appeared last year at the Crestone Music Festival; this is their first appearance in the Music House.

Sunday, June 29, 2008 4p.m. Noah Brenner, Celtic harper
Noah, who grew up in Crestone, has been playing the harp since age five, and now he is a junior at the University of Oregon, majoring in Celtic harp. He has appeared in the Music House several times, and each year he just keeps getting more and more amazing! His varied repertoire includes transcriptions of classics and South American tangos as well as Celtic tunes.

Sunday, July 6, 2008 2 p.m. Los Dos Americas guitar duo
Jim Bosse of Canon City and Alejandro Davila of Argentina team up to perform their own arrangements of South American music and North American rock music on two classical guitars. They tour together both in Colorado and Argentina. This is their fourth appearence in the Hazlerig Music House.

San Luis Valley musicians Anne Divine, violin, Sue Englert, flute, and Sylvia Hazlerig, piano, will present works by Corelli, Vivaldi, and Brahms. Special guests will be some talented young students of Sue and Sylvia, including Ryan Mathias, Sarah Goldberg, Ross Gyalley-Pap, Jigmei Dorji, and Jesse Jones.

Wednesday, July 30, 2008 8 p.m. A FREE showing of the film "Land of Little Rain" starring Helen Hunt
This 62-minute film recounts the true story of pioneer writer Mary Austin. It was filmed in l988 in the San Luis Valley. Locals will delight in seeing familiar scenes and landmarks.

Sunday, August 10, 2008, 2 p.m. Alisa Fineman, singer-songwriter
Alisa sings traditional and original songs from the Jewish Diaspora. Critic Peter Yarrow said of her ". . .a marvelous addition to the contemporary voices who continue to give life and vitality to the Jewish tradition. Alisa's heart is as warm as her superb voice."

A program of contemporary classical chamber music composed by Sylvia. Dr. Susan Berdahl is professor of flute at Texas A&M Unversity International in Laredo, and Everaldo is a doctoral student in violin performance at Texas Tech in Lubbock. They will be presenting the premier performance of some exciting new pieces composed specifically for them.

Friday, August 22, 2008 7:30 p.m. Sarah Off, violin with Shon Heersink, piano
This will be Sarah's fourth appearance in the Music House. We first heard this young virtuoso violinist from Del Norte when she was fifteen; now she is a student majoring in violin performance at CU Boulder. She just gets more amazing every year! This concert will include offerings by well-known classical composers, and also some compositions of Sylvia Hazlerig.

Sunday, August 31, 2008 2 p.m. Sue Vaughan's Little Vocal Ensemble and soloists with Sylvia Hazlerig, piano
Sue Vaughan, formerly of the Metropolitan Opera, graciously offered to organize this concert as a benefit for the Music House. It will feature her hand-picked ensemble singing music by Rachmaninoff, Douglas Wagner and Sylvia Hazlerig, as well as operatic solos sung by tenor Robert Demko and Sue herself.

Eric's repertoire ranges from Classical to Jazz, Brazilian to New Age and Nuevo Flamenco. His debut CD, "In A Slient Place" has been receiving accolades the world over.

Chuck plays jazz piano, his wife Theano sings, and both compose. They are well-known in the world of jazz, having released numerous albums and toured all over the country. When not on tour, they call Crestone home.

Dr. Paul Erhard, acoustic bass, Annada Prasanna (Bhutto) Pattanaik, flute, and Mutha Kumar, tabla drums, combine their talents to perform Indian Classical fusion music. With its innovative blend of East and West, Atmic Vision creates a new sound in the world of Indian music. This hauntingly beautiful music is spellbinding.

Scott Cossu, from Seattle, a well-known New Age/Jazz pianist, has toured the world, and produced numerous CDs and film and television scores. For his third appearance in the Music House, he teams up with local area musicians in a delightful trio. For this concert only, suggested donation will be $15, or $10 for seniors and students.

Dr. Abram Minzer of Colorado Springs will perform a program of music by Brahms, Debussy, Gershwin, Robert and Clara Schumann, Ginastera, and Sylvia Hazlerig. His command of toucn and tone on the piano are truly masterful. Well-known as a performer on the Front Range, Abe is making his first appearance in Crestone.

The delightful sounds of flute and guitar together have not been heard before in the Music House. These two musicians from the faculty of Adams State College in Alamosa will present a program of classical pieces arranged for this unusual combination.

Heidi is a fine classical pianist from Denver who teaches Alexander Technique at DU’s Lamont School of Music. Her program will include Beethoven’s Appassionata Sonata, as well as selections by Mozart, Schubert, and Ohana.

Wednesday, May 23, 8 p.m. Timothy Wilfong, tenor
Tim Wilfong is a talented young musician just finishing his first year of college at the New England Conservatory, where he sang the role of Monastro in their production of The Magic Flute. He spent his childhood in Crestone/Baca and then attended the Denver High School for the Performing Arts. This concert is to help Tim raise money to spend his summer volunteering in India.

Friday, June 1, 8 p.m. TAMIU Guitar Ensemble
This dynamic, eight-member guitar ensemble, from Texas A&M International University in Laredo, is returning for their second Colorado tour. Under the direction of Dr. Gilberto Soto, the group performs varied selections ranging from Classical to Nuevo Flamenco. They will also be performing a composition that Sylvia Hazlerig wrote for them. Not to be missed!

Sunday, June 10, 2 p.m. Confluence String Quartet
This will be the seventh annual performance in the Hazlerig Music House of this fine classical quartet from Denver. The members are Rene Knetsch and Lynne Glaeske, violins, Don Schumacher, viola, and Richard vonFoerster, cello. They will perform music by Alessandro Scarlatti, Max Bruch, Philip Glass, and Sylvia Hazlerig.

Noah has been well-known in the Crestone/Baca area as a harper since he was five years old. He has delighted audiences in the Hazlerig Music House twice before. Now completing his second year as a music major at the University of Oregon, his playing is more spectacular than ever.

Sunday, July 15, 2 p.m. Jason Wilder, singer-songwriter and guitarist
Jason's song "Whispers of Love" was a Top Finalist in the 2005 Unisong International Competition, and a #1 hit on the UK's MP3Songs Top Unsigned Artists Chart. Sylvia will play Beethoven's great Tempest Sonata, an assortment of Nocturnes by Chopin, and some of her own compositions, including her Variations on The Streets of Laredo and the Crestone-Baca Tango, to celebrate the recent refurbishing of her antique Steinway.

Sunday, August 12, 2 p.m. Willem Ibes, piano
Dr. Ibes is an internationally known pianist, currently on the faculty of St. John's Unversity in St. Cloud, MN. He has played in Carnegie Hall, has recorded many CDs, and will be touring China early this summer. This is his third appearance in the Hazlerig Music House. He will present a varied program of Classical repertoire, including the great Beethoven Sonata, Opus 109.

Sunday, August 19, 2 p.m. Sarah Off, violin, with Shon Heersink, piano
Sarah is an 18-year-old violin prodigy who has played twice before in the Hazlerig Music House, stunning audiences with her virtuosity and musicality. She has toured in Europe with the Dallas, Texas Youth Symphony, and has just completed her first year of college. For lovers of good classical music, it is a rare treat to hear Sarah perform.

Friday, September 7, 7:30 p.m. Dude Suite in their first ever all-acoustic concert
Dude Suite plays music in service to the groove. With influences ranging from Bach and Bebop, Coltrane and The Who, to Zappa and the Grateful Dead, their sound has been called Free Acid Jazz and just plain jammin'. Chris Kroger plays piano and sings, with Mathias Roberts on bass, and Jim Price on drums. Originals mixed with standards. www.dudesuite.com

Sunday, September 23, 2 p.m. Thomas Mastroianni, piano
Thomas Mastroianni, who has presented concerts on four continents, will return to the house with a program of Chopin and Debussy. He will bring us a program based on his recent presentations at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC and from his concerts on the Amalfi Coast, Italy. This is a not-to-be missed concert for classical music fans. Last year he received spontaneous standing ovations for his all-Liszt program. Since then, Sylvia has had her antique (1916) Steinway piano rebuilt (it was in the shop for 6 months), in order to provide a piano worthy of Mastroianni for his return appearance.

A resident of the SLV, Leigh Ann is well-known in the area for her beautiful voice and evocative songs. She will sing and play keyboard, backed up by Aaron Lewis, flute, sax and bass, and Don Conoscenti, guitar, bass and vocals.

Wednesday, November 14, 7 p.m. Celtic Duo: Jamie Laval and Ashley Broder
Celtic violinist Jamie Laval won the 2002 U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Championship. Ashley Broder, mandolin, is a two-time Western Picking champion. Friday, November 23, 7 p.m. The Bedlam Bards
This highly entertaining duo is famous in the RenFaire and Brown Coat (Firefly fans) circuits. Cedric (James Hazlerig) plays mostly fiddle and mandola; Hawke (Rick Morrow) plays guitar and penny whistle; both of them sing, dance, and tell stories. Friday, December 7, 7 p.m. Kane Mathis ensemble
An amazing night of music featuring the African Kora and the Turkish Oud, with Kane Mathis on kora, oud, and vocals, Nina Vukmanic on bass, Etienne Capko on percussion, and Marjorie de Muynck on saxophones, harmonica and African flute. This music opens the heart in a most delightful way.
