Sunday, January 6, 2008, 2 p.m. Ann Federowicz, fiddle and Steve Storm, guitar and vocals
Crestone audiences delight in this dynamic duo who play a mix of Bluegrass, Celtic, and old-time folk music. Don't miss this one--Ann is moving away from Colorado, so it may be your last time to hear them together.

Sunday, January 13, 2008 2 p.m. Jon Sousa, guitar
Virtuoso guitarist Jon Sousa has been described as “a power to behold.” Combining diverse influences from Celtic, Jazz, African, Electronic, Bluegrass and Folk, Jon is a melting pot of musical gold. He has toured through the US and northern Europe, and studied with world-renowned guitarist Pierre Bensusan.

Friday, January 18, 2008 7 p.m. Sylvia Hazlerig, piano
Sylvia will play an eclectic program: Schubert and Brahms in the first half, and Scott Joplin after intermission. Joplin didn’t only write Rags—you will hear his lovely Mexican Serenade called “Solace”, and the Finale from his opera, Treemonisha.

Daniel, from Toronto, is a rising star in the world of classical guitar. He stunned audiences here at the Music House back in 2000 when he was a student at Denver University; now he is playing all over the world and featured on four commerical CDs. Wecome back, Daniel Bolshoy!

Friday, March 21, 2008 7:30 p.m. Dr. Fritz Gechter and Dr. Mary Grace Galvan-Carroll, classical pianists
These two piano profs from Laredo, Texas will present a delightful evening of solos and duets by Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Grieg, Debussy, Gershwin, and Lerner&Lowe. Music House audiences will recall Fritz's brilliant playing from his previous appearances; this time he is bringing a colleague with him for a double delight.

Sunday, March 30, 2008 2 p.m. The Playground, from Denver University
The Playground is a group dedicated to the performance of music from the late 20th and early 21st centuries, mostly by living composers. This promises to be an exciting afternoon of music you may never have heard before.

Sunday, April 20, 2008 2 p.m. Jerry Barlow, celtic guitar
This is Jerry's second appearance in the house. Based in Denver, Jerry tours all over the country, and his latest CD, Bring Down the Storm, received a glowing review in the Celtic Connection magazine.

Saturday, May 10, 2008 8 p.m. The Pike Ensemble
Colorado musicians Tom Munch, Rex Rideout, and Don Richmond, playing a whole slew of folk instruments, including guitars, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, pipes, and even a Hardanger fiddle (come and see this amazing instrument!), in a moving historical program tracing the journey of Zebulon Pike in Colorado, through the songs and instrumentals that were popular at that time.

Sunday, May 25, 2008 2 p.m. The Confluence String Quartet
This is the eighth annual appearance of this wonderful classical ensemble from Denver. The musicians are Rene Knetsch and Lynne Glaeske, violins, Don Schumacher, viola, and Richard vonFoerster, cello. This year's program will include works by Beethoven, Puccini, Peter Sculthorpe, and Terry Riley.

Saturday, June 14, 2008 8 p.m. Washer, art rock duo
Sisters Katherine and Elizabeth Michalak make up this Crestone-based art rock band. Their hip, intelligent music combines thoughtful and well-crafted lyrics with the complex guitar work they originally developed as instrumental guitarists. They appeared last year at the Crestone Music Festival; this is their first appearance in the Music House.

Sunday, June 29, 2008 4p.m. Noah Brenner, Celtic harper
Noah, who grew up in Crestone, has been playing the harp since age five, and now he is a junior at the University of Oregon, majoring in Celtic harp. He has appeared in the Music House several times, and each year he just keeps getting more and more amazing! His varied repertoire includes transcriptions of classics and South American tangos as well as Celtic tunes.

Sunday, July 6, 2008 2 p.m. Los Dos Americas guitar duo
Jim Bosse of Canon City and Alejandro Davila of Argentina team up to perform their own arrangements of South American music and North American rock music on two classical guitars. They tour together both in Colorado and Argentina. This is their fourth appearence in the Hazlerig Music House.

Sunday, July 13, 2008 2 p.m. The Alpine Overlook Chamber Music Ensemble
San Luis Valley musicians Anne Divine, violin, Sue Englert, flute, and Sylvia Hazlerig, piano, will present works by Corelli, Vivaldi, and Brahms. Special guests will be some talented young students of Sue and Sylvia, including Ryan Mathias, Sarah Goldberg, Ross Gyalley-Pap, Jigmei Dorji, and Jesse Jones.

Sunday, July 27, 2008 2 p.m. Ed Wheatley, keyboard, trumpet and vocals
Ed Wheatley, from Creede, Colorado, puts on a delightful trip down Memory Lane, performing popular songs and show tunes from the 1920s through the 1960s.

Wednesday, July 30, 2008 8 p.m. A FREE showing of the film "Land of Little Rain" starring Helen Hunt
This 62-minute film recounts the true story of pioneer writer Mary Austin. It was filmed in l988 in the San Luis Valley. Locals will delight in seeing familiar scenes and landmarks.

Sunday, August 10, 2008, 2 p.m. Alisa Fineman, singer-songwriter
Alisa sings traditional and original songs from the Jewish Diaspora. Critic Peter Yarrow said of her ". . .a marvelous addition to the contemporary voices who continue to give life and vitality to the Jewish tradition. Alisa's heart is as warm as her superb voice."

Sunday, August 17, 2008 2 p.m. Susan Berdahl, flute, Everaldo Martinez, violin, withs Sylvia Hazlerig, piano and harpsichord
A program of contemporary classical chamber music composed by Sylvia. Dr. Susan Berdahl is professor of flute at Texas A&M Unversity International in Laredo, and Everaldo is a doctoral student in violin performance at Texas Tech in Lubbock. They will be presenting the premier performance of some exciting new pieces composed specifically for them.

Friday, August 22, 2008 7:30 p.m. Sarah Off, violin with Shon Heersink, piano
This will be Sarah's fourth appearance in the Music House. We first heard this young virtuoso violinist from Del Norte when she was fifteen; now she is a student majoring in violin performance at CU Boulder. She just gets more amazing every year! This concert will include offerings by well-known classical composers, and also some compositions of Sylvia Hazlerig.

Sunday, August 31, 2008 2 p.m. Sue Vaughan's Little Vocal Ensemble and soloists with Sylvia Hazlerig, piano
Sue Vaughan, formerly of the Metropolitan Opera, graciously offered to organize this concert as a benefit for the Music House. It will feature her hand-picked ensemble singing music by Rachmaninoff, Douglas Wagner and Sylvia Hazlerig, as well as operatic solos sung by tenor Robert Demko and Sue herself.

Saturday, May 12, 8 p.m. Heidi Brende, piano
Heidi is a fine classical pianist from Denver who teaches Alexander Technique at DU’s Lamont School of Music. Her program will include Beethoven’s Appassionata Sonata, as well as selections by Mozart, Schubert, and Ohana.

with Alix Corboy, piano, Don Schumacher, viola and

Wednesday, May 23, 8 p.m. Timothy Wilfong, tenor
Tim Wilfong is a talented young musician just finishing his first year of college at the New England Conservatory, where he sang the role of Monastro in their production of The Magic Flute. He spent his childhood in Crestone/Baca and then attended the Denver High School for the Performing Arts. This concert is to help Tim raise money to spend his summer volunteering in India.

Friday, June 1, 8 p.m. TAMIU Guitar Ensemble
This dynamic, eight-member guitar ensemble, from Texas A&M International University in Laredo, is returning for their second Colorado tour. Under the direction of Dr. Gilberto Soto, the group performs varied selections ranging from Classical to Nuevo Flamenco. They will also be performing a composition that Sylvia Hazlerig wrote for them. Not to be missed!

Sunday, June 10, 2 p.m. Confluence String Quartet
This will be the seventh annual performance in the Hazlerig Music House of this fine classical quartet from Denver. The members are Rene Knetsch and Lynne Glaeske, violins, Don Schumacher, viola, and Richard vonFoerster, cello. They will perform music by Alessandro Scarlatti, Max Bruch, Philip Glass, and Sylvia Hazlerig.

Sunday, July 1, 2 p.m. Noah Brenner, Celtic harper
Noah has been well-known in the Crestone/Baca area as a harper since he was five years old. He has delighted audiences in the Hazlerig Music House twice before. Now completing his second year as a music major at the University of Oregon, his playing is more spectacular than ever.

Sunday, July 15, 2 p.m. Jason Wilder, singer-songwriter and guitarist
Jason's song "Whispers of Love" was a Top Finalist in the 2005 Unisong International Competition, and a #1 hit on the UK's MP3Songs Top Unsigned Artists Chart. He has recently moved to Crestone, where he is completing his debut album, and gearing up for a promotional tour. www.myspace.com/jasonwildermusic.

Sunday, July 29, 2 p.m. Sylvia Hazlerig pianist-composer
Sylvia will play Beethoven's great Tempest Sonata, an assortment of Nocturnes by Chopin, and some of her own compositions, including her Variations on The Streets of Laredo and the Crestone-Baca Tango, to celebrate the recent refurbishing of her antique Steinway.

Sunday, August 12, 2 p.m. Willem Ibes, piano
Dr. Ibes is an internationally known pianist, currently on the faculty of St. John's Unversity in St. Cloud, MN. He has played in Carnegie Hall, has recorded many CDs, and will be touring China early this summer. This is his third appearance in the Hazlerig Music House. He will present a varied program of Classical repertoire, including the great Beethoven Sonata, Opus 109.

Sunday, August 19, 2 p.m. Sarah Off, violin, with Shon Heersink, piano
Sarah is an 18-year-old violin prodigy who has played twice before in the Hazlerig Music House, stunning audiences with her virtuosity and musicality. She has toured in Europe with the Dallas, Texas Youth Symphony, and has just completed her first year of college. For lovers of good classical music, it is a rare treat to hear Sarah perform.

Friday, September 7, 7:30 p.m. Dude Suite in their first ever all-acoustic concert
Dude Suite plays music in service to the groove. With influences ranging from Bach and Bebop, Coltrane and The Who, to Zappa and the Grateful Dead, their sound has been called Free Acid Jazz and just plain jammin'. Chris Kroger plays piano and sings, with Mathias Roberts on bass, and Jim Price on drums. Originals mixed with standards. www.dudesuite.com

Sunday, September 23, 2 p.m. Thomas Mastroianni, piano
Thomas Mastroianni, who has presented concerts on four continents, will return to the house with a program of Chopin and Debussy. He will bring us a program based on his recent presentations at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC and from his concerts on the Amalfi Coast, Italy. This is a not-to-be missed concert for classical music fans. Last year he received spontaneous standing ovations for his all-Liszt program. Since then, Sylvia has had her antique (1916) Steinway piano rebuilt (it was in the shop for 6 months), in order to provide a piano worthy of Mastroianni for his return appearance.

Sue Englert, flute, Anne Divine, violin, Jack Barton, cello, and Sylvia Hazlerig, piano, will present a delightful afternoon of classical chamber music by Vivaldi, Haydn, Brahms, and others.

Saturday, November 3, 7 p.m. Leigh Ann Phillips, singer-songwriter
A resident of the SLV, Leigh Ann is well-known in the area for her beautiful voice and evocative songs. She will sing and play keyboard, backed up by Aaron Lewis, flute, sax and bass, and Don Conoscenti, guitar, bass and vocals.

Wednesday, November 14, 7 p.m. Celtic Duo: Jamie Laval and Ashley Broder
Celtic violinist Jamie Laval won the 2002 U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Championship. Ashley Broder, mandolin, is a two-time Western Picking champion. Together they form a stunning instrumental duo rendering traditional Irish, Scottish, and Bluegrass music with hints of classical refinement and ethnic music from around the world. www.jamielaval.com and www.ashleybroder.com

Friday, November 23, 7 p.m. The Bedlam Bards
This highly entertaining duo is famous in the RenFaire and Brown Coat (Firefly fans) circuits. Cedric (James Hazlerig) plays mostly fiddle and mandola; Hawke (Rick Morrow) plays guitar and penny whistle; both of them sing, dance, and tell stories. Their latest CD, “On the Drift” is flying off the shelves at CD Baby.www.bedlambards.com .

Friday, December 7, 7 p.m. Kane Mathis ensemble
An amazing night of music featuring the African Kora and the Turkish Oud, with Kane Mathis on kora, oud, and vocals, Nina Vukmanic on bass, Etienne Capko on percussion, and Marjorie de Muynck on saxophones, harmonica and African flute. This music opens the heart in a most delightful way.

Sunday, December 23, 5 p.m. Holiday Pot-luck and Sing-along
An old-fashioned Christmas party with an opportunity for you to sing all the traditional carols. Bring a favorite holiday treat. If you play an instrument, bring that along, too.
